Emmy Hennings- The Mother of Dada

Emmy Hennings is an icon of mine, yet like all good icons she’s not that well known, not really anyway, unfortunately her relationship with a man and other men seem to dominate discussion of her. Inspired by her dances, performances and the theme of dolls in her work, this illustration seeks to showcase Emmy in a near genderless way, she was pioneering and phenomenal, the art she produced is still ahead of its time.

In looking at female Dadaists, one should read Ruth Hemus’ Dada’s Women, a fantastic work, unprecedented in its ground-breaking research. Dada’s women were unpredictable, powerful and diverse and must not be forgotten.
